That entire thing is a myth. One of those ridiculous things that we believe because we find the idea horrifying rather than that it makes any sense.
Does it makes sense to you, that any creature would evolve a behavior pattern of crawling into the open mouths of larger creatures? Would you?
It was actually started as a social experiment in how far rumors spread. A social studies student made up a top-ten list of seemingly insane "facts" and emailed it out to a few people in her college, then conducted surveys a while later to see how many people had heard of these "facts". Unfortunately the spread didn't stop at her college, and continued for years as people shared the 10 facts email like a chain letter. Now it's an urban myth commonly thought of as a true fact.
The spider one just happened to be the most memorable of the 10 (because, as noted, it's very disturbing).
