Contrary to popular belief Smith actually comes from the Latin to smite which refers to warriors. meaning smith actually means warrior in most cases. Funny though.

While that might be the case for some, there are also a fair number of English-descended people whose ancestors were actually smiths, along with Saddlers, Fetchers, Thatchers, Woods(men, who cut firewood) Graves(diggers) Masons, Potters, and a whole host of other tradespeople. Some of these profession titles have changed a bit from the modern words, but still have there origins in the period when working peasants became allowed to take family names.
