I think the folks who study animal behavior had disproved this, actually.
The cat has instincts to chase and hunt, but when it reaches the threshold of its house, it remembers there is a can of much tastier cat food being emptied onto a saucer for it inside. MUCH easier to eat and tastier than a mouse corpse of more bones, fur, and skin than real meat.
