You kind of got the feeling A:TLA had at least the general plot all written out from start to finish before the first episode even went to the animators, where as with A:LoK, they wrote it one book at a time, and changed their minds about what sort of story they were going to tell a few times in between.
Part of that was actually fan feedback: People were kind of getting put off by the teenage romance drama, so they shifted focus on the next "book".
