Just a different facet of the abusive home he was raised in, I suppose.
Reminds me of an odd epiphany I had while reading Japanese H-mangas.
Several times I've read (particularly in the less-nice H-mangas) of Japanese schoolgirls complaining that unwashed penis smells like squid.
Now... I can neither confirm nor deny that (nor do I really want to) so let's just assume I take that at face value for a moment.
I'm not Japanese; I'm Canadian of European descent, and live far enough from the coast that about the only place I MIGHT be able to find squid is at an Asian grocery store of some sort, which I don't really frequent. In other words, I haven't really had any opportunities to eat squid, nor am I motivated to look hard for them. I have never smelled a squid.
When those h-manga girls say "unwashed penis smells like squid", what MY actual take-away from that is, "squid smells like unwashed penis".
I have even LESS interest in ever trying to eat squid NOW! O_O
