One joke formula is to set up an expectation and then deviate sharply from it.

They assumed he meant that his grandfather had been helping Jews escape Nazi-occupied countries during WWII, in the 1940s. Very noble.

He was actually just making phony passports and selling them for profit; in other words, just a criminal.
