Maybe it isn't ment to be special, just to admire the detail in a handmade work. And if you still think they aren't special why dont you try to make one, i'd like to see you try.

The same guys were selling rubber balls. I dont know how to make them either but i still dont think that they are special ;-)

It's hand made, unless you are not know how to make one you can't say about something that it isn't special.
I know how to make the same with CNC, but do it hand made it's too much for me I barely know how to engrave. I think also what you have seen in Rome it is made by machine.
