You tell a 5 year old they have to wait another year for their next birthday, that's 20% of their age; it seems like a really long time.
You tell a 50 year old it's their birthday again, it's been 2% of their age since the last one, and they can barely believe it's already here again.
You tell a teenager (or nearly anyone, actually) about an event that happened 1 year before they were born (presuming there's no personal or familial connection to said event) they emotionally feel about it the exact same way as they would an event that happened 100 years before they were born.
