Any fantasies, romanticizing the past, role-playing, or similar, to any period prior to about 1920... are better as fantasies than reality, just from a factor of hygiene alone.

Just toilet paper on its own was only patented in 1857 (took longer to become widespread use), and the number of people dying off from diseased resulting from having poop still on your hands that you eat with dropped sharply. Think about that. Every gentlemanly handshake is a hand he wiped his ass with earlier. A hand he's going to eat dinner with later. Not only will you eat some of your own shit, you get that guy's shit too. Gee the past was swell!
