I don't understand why this doesn't happen at EVERY sentencing hearing.

You've got nothing left to lose, and a rare, magical chance to remind self-important people that playing dress-up in a black bathrobe does not equate to god-like social status.

He did have something to loose. The jail sentence became much bigger.

If the original sentence was long enough, an extension isn't that meaningful.

As I remember, he was sentenced to 3 years in jail before this. And will face from 25 years after this. So the extension is pretty big.
