"Holy whoredom" huh?
You know, in ancient Rome, the vocations of priestess and prostitute were the same. You'd visit the temple, pay your tithe, have a "religious communion" with one of the holy priestesses, and walk away feeling renewed!
Then some new cult worked its way into Rome, and they didn't like how much POWER sexually desirable women wielded in society (or anyone having power other than them, really), and began to demonize woman's sexuality.
We still attach a lot of shame to the role of a prostitute, even pretend it's a crime, even today.
