I think Tom Boys kind of fade away around the age of 16 - 18. They are either lesbians later or getting hit on by to many men to keep dressing like a dude.
You may have a point there. When I hear the phrase, "tomboy", I'm not picturing an adult woman. Even one dressed the same way and being active in sports is more like, "woman, casual sports wear".
