While this might be a public restroom... the rule in the house I grew up in was that you leave the door open whenever the bathroom is unoccupied. Not only can guests find it without asking or wandering around opening your bedroom doors, but it means that if the door is closed, it's always occupied. No checking, knocking, or accidentally opening the door necessary.
