I think the slight advantage in the books' favour is that the imagery is limited by the child's imagination. It's like a natural filter for the worst of adult concepts. The video game, the imagery comes from the imagination of jaded adults trying to evoke a reaction from other very jaded adults. That could very easily be more horrific and distrubing than a young child can imagine for himself.
