Think about how a canon works for a moment. A heavy metal tube, gunpowder packed deep into one end, a canon ball dropped into the pipe, and the powder ignited via a spark of heat transferred through a tiny hole to the otherwise airtight powder. An explosion occurs, and the cannon ball, having only one direction it can escape the explosion, is propelled violently through the barrel.
All that process and mechanism, with considerable refinement and improvement of course, is contained within a single bullet the size of a finger if not smaller. The BULLET is the canon-equivalent.
The gun? The thing we consider to be the actual weapon? It's only the equivalent of this old thing:
Guns are not the impressive invention that changed civilization and how we make war; bullets are.
