In some movie and western cartoon native american measure length with "bow shot" maybe actual americans want to give a tribute to native. XD
maybe they are urged to be different... even if it is stupid as fuck...
I think is much more about historical folk custom, america is much more isolated, other country like germany, french or even (relatively) china are much closer together. those country get influenced each other, differently of america.
This is so apropos! Why we stay stuck with an archaic, cumbersome system of measurement just because we inherited it from Great Britain is beyond me. I'm an engineer and have to force myself to think in English measurements when dealing with others; although it gives me no end of pleasure to go into a deli and ask for a 1/4 kilo of ham or cheese. :-D I love to cook and when I write down my recipes I use the CGS system of measurement because I use a digital scale for measurements. It's much more accurate to weigh out 200g of liquid (200ml) than having to judge the meniscus. But what do you expect from a country where kids graduating high school are barely literate and who can't make simple change without the register doing it for them!
There were attempts by the government to convert the country to metric, several times before, but the resistance from the general public was fierce. Adult Americans no longer in school didn't want to learn anything new. :(
in fact, many firms are using the metric system, they are just not telling it to their dumb customers. they would scratch their pride of beeing FREE to do dumb things.
A poronkusema is a unit of distance of about 7.5Km in Finland. It’s how far a reindeer can travel without stopping to urinate.
